Get to Know: Black Botanical Press

Want your wedding flowers to last a lifetime? Looking for sustainable, affordable, and unique options? Hazel from Black Botanical Press can make all that happen and more! Not only did she start pressing flowers seven years ago, but she was also a florist for several years, where she learned firsthand the mechanics of floral design. In this post, we get to know the woman behind the pretty blooms and find out what inspires her!

What brings you the greatest joy in your life?

Sowing seeds for the garden and cuddling with my dog after a long day of hiking.

What brought you to Tahoe?

Iwas brought up in Reno, and I moved back here after finishing my degree in Washington.

What is a must-see hidden gem in Lake Tahoe?

I think the best-hidden gems should remain hidden.

Describe Lake Tahoe to someone that has never been here…

Trees, turquoise water, sandy beaches, and the freshest air.

Tahoe lifestyle: winter or summer?

Winter all the way.

If you were not in the wedding industry, what would you do?

I would probably start my own farm and grow food and flowers.

What inspires your work?

Everything nature and the beauty of plants and animals.

What is a fun fact about your company?

I am a one-woman show, and I am 26 years old.

What is the career highlight you are most proud of?

Creating my biggest commission for Great Basin Apothecary in Fallon, NV. A 16x20” shadow box was created with leftover florals from past projects.

What is your go-to conversation starter with a potential client?

I like to talk to them about their wedding flowers and the different styles that inspire them.

How would you describe the perfect day in Lake Tahoe?

Spending the day snowshoeing around the trees on a Tuesday, not seeing another person, and just taking in the sights with my dog and a friend by my side. Then we go to Incined Burger for some food, then drive to Tahoe City and shop around by the lake.

What are you most proud of?

The fact that I started this business with no outside loans, I don’t have any debt, and I am doing it all independently.

Who inspires you the most?

Bugs.

What is your life motto?

We are here, so we might as well enjoy life for what it is and try to do things that make you happy every day.

What was the most recent thing that made you laugh?

Beating my partner in chess, finally!

What’s the most useless talent you have?

I can do a handstand.

What is the closest thing to real magic?

Watching a flower bloom that you started from seed or mushrooms.

What was your go-to activity during quarantine?

Skateboarding.

What kind of wedding guest are you?

The quiet one that cries a lot and is the first one to the cake cutting.

Any song you can add to our brides' and grooms’ budding wedding playlist?

Orange Peeler by Horse Jumper of Love.

Working in the wedding industry is not for the faint of heart. How do you rest and rejuvenate?

I lay outside in the grass and pretend I am a worm, drink tea, and watch movies.

What is something people might not know about you?

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day.

Any four-legged friends in your home?

My dog Zephyr. Everyone thinks he is a black lab, but he is a husky, german shepherd, boxer, chihuahua mix.
