You’ll Never Meet A Pastry You Won’t Like At Cornerstone Bakery!

Cornerstone Bakery in Downtown Truckee is on everyone’s lips! Not only have they been making life a little sweeter since November 2018, but they also make everything from scratch. So you’ll never find any cake mixes, or fillings, or buttercreams from a bucket. Instead, Cornerstone takes hand-crafting to the next level by offering everything from the simplest to most complex cakes, edible party favors, and mini dessert tables. In addition, you’ll find a variety of freshly baked pastries, as well as espresso service and teas from Temple Coffee. In other words, these people literally cater to your every craving!

We posed a few questions to the lovely owner Jenny Smart, who always wanted to pursue a career in pastry arts because she wanted to bring joy into people’s lives. And that is exactly what she did!

What brings you the greatest joy in your life?
My two big joys are my family and my career.

What brought you to Tahoe?
Work – I took the job as Martis Camp pastry chef.

Tahoe lifestyle: winter or summer?
I love that we get all four seasons, but the summer is the most special.

If you weren’t in this industry, what would you do?
I love growing food. I would explore gardening for sure and parlay into cooking with everything through the whole supply chain.

What inspires your work?
I LOVE building memories and celebrating through food.

How would you describe the perfect day in Lake Tahoe?
I’ll start the day with a great cup of coffee and a fresh-baked treat from Cornerstone Bakery. Then, in the summer, I’ll head to one of the beaches with the family; I love to hit up one of the farmer markets, too!

What are you most proud of?
Opening a business!

Who inspires you the most?
My team at the bakery. They work at all hours of the day and are so dedicated to their craft. I’m so lucky to have such an incredible team.

What is your life motto?
I don’t really have a motto, but I think it’s super important to retain a sense of humility.

What was the most recent thing that made you laugh?
My kids! Never a dull moment…

Working in the wedding industry is not for the faint of heart. So how do you rest and rejuvenate?
Time with the family at home, time in the backyard garden, a bike ride or hike outside, a good cup of coffee in the morning, and a good glass of wine in the evening.

What is something people might not know about you?
I’m a big Green Bay Packer fan – I grew up in Wisconsin, so it’s in my DNA!

Any four-legged friends in your home?
No! A husband and two kids under age six are plenty!
