Women in Business: Danielle and Emily from Sorella Apothecary

Are you of the opinion that you can feed your skin and treat your soul simultaneously? Then you’re in luck because today we’re talking skincare and entrepreneurship!

We interviewed the founders of Sorella Apothecary, a professional skincare line featured on our Marketplace. And we were surprised to find out that the owners go way back. Not only are Danielle and Emily sisters (by marriage), but they have known each other since their kindergarten days. So with both being self-proclaimed “product junkies” and constantly searching for the perfect product line and coming up short, they decided why not make a career out of it. Cue Sorella Apothecary!

Naturally, we wanted to learn more about how they differentiate themselves in this challenging industry and what advice they would give to women interested in starting their own business. So join us as we get Danielle’s take on their inspiring entrepreneurial journey!

Danielle

Why did you decide to become an entrepreneur?

Emily and I both come from long lines of entrepreneurs. My father owned his own business, and I watched him, and my mother work so hard to make it successful. Emily’s grandfather owned a water company before it was “cool” to drink bottled water. Her parents took over running it later on. I remember going to her house when we were little and thinking they were so fancy with their bottled water! Sometimes it just felt like it was in our blood!

What challenges did you face along the way, and how did you overcome them?

I think owning your own business comes with challenges from the beginning, and they never really stop. It’s not necessarily a negative thing. You learn to turn them into positives and use them to help grow your business! We truly are a family business and have learned to capitalize on our strengths and hire a fantastic team to fill in wherever we lack.

How do you differentiate yourself in this challenging industry?

We’ve always been super transparent as a brand and made sure to stay true to our core values, and I think that makes us shine since we aren’t always jumping on any trend that comes about-we really dive in and make sure that what we put out is sustainable and works.

What or who has been the most significant influence in your business and why?

One of the most significant influences has been our spa partners. We truly listen to their clients and their business needs, and if we can help, then we will! Their success is our success.

Do you listen to podcasts or read motivational books, and if so, which ones do you recommend?

I love Brene Brown. She has an overall air of positivity, and reading anything she puts out makes you feel happy and inspired.

What advice would you give to women who are interested in starting their own business?

If that’s your dream-then start! No matter how small. Dive in and figure out a way to make it work, whether it’s attending networking meetings in your community or saving every last penny to fund it. Don’t sit on a dream because you think it’s not possible. It is!
