Why Tahoe Deserves an Outside Wedding

You chose Lake Tahoe and Tahoe National Forest as the location for your wedding, so why not capitalize on the stunning scene? There are some important things to remember when planning an outdoor wedding:

First, you must make sure that your guests will be comfortable. Even though 85 degrees compares favorably to the temperatures in lower elevations, being exposed to direct sunlight will be quite warm and possibly uncomfortable. Spending time outside in the heat means there needs to be easy access to water and sun protection for guests and the wedding party. Bonus Tahoe points if you provide reusable water container options!

Once fall hits, outside temperatures can drop and the needs of guests change. Offer warm drinks, blankets, hand warmers, and heating lamps if possible. The sun is concerning at any temperature, so consider providing sunscreen in cooler temperatures as well.

Second, outdoor weddings are at the mercy of the weather. Tahoe’s thunderstorm season is late July-September and the snow may start falling as early as October. No matter what season, any type of weather might occur in Tahoe! Make sure to have a backup plan for unexpected weather. Depending on where your wedding is, be conscious of the wind exposure, too – will guest hear the ceremony over the howls of late afternoon winds, will the neverending swilling of your hair and dress be distracting?

Third, there are many hungry critters in Tahoe’s woods that would love to crash your reception. Chipmunks, squirrels, and birds love stealing any food they can get their hands on. They can be quite aggressive about it! Consider having someone on critter duty to run them all away from the food or keeping food locked up. Bears should keep away – they don’t like noise so much – but make sure that all food is disposed of properly at the end of the night.

Lastly, outdoor weddings mean more room for activity! Guests will enjoy playing lawn games during the reception. Some favorite options: YARDzee, giant Jenga, corn hole, lawn bowling, and newlywed mad libs.
