Something Borrowed, Something Blue

We have all heard the saying "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" but where does it come from? What is the meaning behind it, and is it still used today?

The tradition comes from the old English saying "Something Olde, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue, A Sixpence in your Shoe" and are meant to be four good luck charms the bride carries with her on her wedding day. Traditionally they are given to the bride by her family and loved ones, but she can also get them for herself as well. Something old represents stability and steadiness, something new signifies the future, something borrowed symbolizes borrowed happiness and something blue stands for purity, love and fidelity. Lastly the sixpence in your shoe is a wish for good fortune and prosperity (this part is primarily a British custom). We love traditions and we especially love one that incorporates so many good things and potential family heirlooms. Plus blue is the perfect color for Lake Tahoe weddings, it matches our lake!

There are quite a few ways to get creative with your something blue addition to your wedding. You could go all out and have a blue wedding dress or blue accent to your dress such as a ribbon or a blue skirt. Or you could go more subtle such as a blue ribbon around your bouquet or blue suede pumps under your dress. Regardless of what you choose blue accents are not only fitting for your Tahoe wedding but also a symbol of a classic tradition we are still fully behind.
