Get to Know Reel Eyes

Our favorite videographers have an "eye" for wedding storytelling and Darren Baca, owner and director of Reel Eyes Media, is no exception. This talented Reno/Tahoe local employs an artistic approach to filming and cutting edge editing to create wedding films that are both emotionally powerful and unique. In this installment of our "Get To Know" series, we learn more about the man behind the lens, including what inspires his work, his favorite way to spend a day in Tahoe, and more!

What brings you the greatest joy in your life?

My fiance, Shelbie, our dog, Kylo, and the life we've made together. Also working hard at something and seeing it pay off. And definitely spending time outdoors with family and friends.

What first brought you to Tahoe?

Growing up only two hours from Tahoe, my parents liked taking us kids to the lake every summer. I fell in love with it then and it's just always felt like home. It's one of my favorite places on earth and I'm lucky it's still in my backyard.

In terms of the Tahoe lifestyle, do you prefer winter or summer?

Summer for sure! Hiking. Backpacking. Fishing. Beach. Golf.Repeat.

If you weren't a wedding filmmaker, what would you do?

I still fantasize about what it would be like to be a professional golfer on the PGA Tour. Golf has been a passion of mine since I was a kid and still is. But I'll come back down to earth and say working in the golf industry would be more realistic.

What inspires your work?

Every couple has a unique story to tell which is what makes creating wedding videos so fun. Same with promotional videos -each business has an interesting story to tell. My clients are my inspiration and creative outlet. I also pull inspiration from other creative filmmakers. Whether I'm noticing film techniques from a Hollywood blockbuster, low budget documentary, or YouTube video, inspiration can be discovered anywhere!

How would you describe the perfect day in Lake Tahoe?

The sun's out, it's 70 degrees. I'm up high in the mountains backpacking with my fiance and dog discovering new places.

What are you most proud of?

Starting my own business has got to be up there. I got lucky honing in on a passion early and worked hard to maintain a living from it. Oh, and of course, the loving relationship my fiance and I have created for one another!

Who inspires you the most?

Someone who creates something from nothing, whether it's a successful business or overcoming any type of adversity. My grandparents immigrated to this country with next to nothing and, with a lot of hard work, ended up thriving. Their story has always inspired me.

What is your life motto?

Keep your head down, work hard, and make the most out of the free time it affords you.

What was the most recent thing that made you laugh?

My dog, Kylo. He does crazy things every day that make me laugh. Kylo is a golden retriever mix and we love him very much. He's a great trail dog and companion.

Working in the wedding industry is not for the faint of heart. How do you rest and rejuvenate?

It's hard for me to sit still so "resting" for me consists of getting out and moving, whether it's golfing, fishing, hiking, or backpacking. Concentrating on a task outdoors completely unrelated to work refuels the soul.

What is something people might not know about you?

I'm a helicopter pilot school dropout and proud to have been a student of 4 different junior colleges. Finding your way as a young adult can be tough...

Well there you have it - how fitting that a talented storyteller has an intriguing backstory of his own! We write these stories to help our readers get to know their potential wedding vendors and if you'd like to learn more about Darren or see examples of his work, head over to Reel Eyes Media's vendor guide portfolio.
