Calvin Hobson's Emotive Photography for Extraordinary Brides

Every good wedding photographer has a signature style, their own artistic imprint that influences the archive of your day. When the style of the photographer and couple are a match, the results are magical. And for Lake Tahoe photographer Calvin Hobson, it’s an alchemy that leads to the extraordinary.

One only has to look at Hobson’s portfolio to know that his type of bride is anything but ordinary. “My style is well suited to the bride who has a strong and individual vision of what she is trying to represent through her wedding,” he says. “And she’s not afraid to be fearless and wild.”

This affinity for the unexpected is evident in Hobson’s own path to the realm of wedding photography as well. Entering the Air Force directly out of high school, he found himself living on foreign soil at a young age, traveling the world fixing military aircraft. With a camera as his consistent companion on this itinerant path, he began photographing his surroundings  – “both the beautiful and not so beautiful,” he offers.

Once back in civilian life, with a photojournalistic mindset developed through his travels, Hobson began shooting portraiture of family and friends. A rebound from the routinized and restrictive culture of the military, his distinctive approach is marked by a sense of freedom and the desire to find the beauty in everything. It’s a style that resonates deeply with couples who share this vision. “I knew Calvin was my wedding photographer even before I met my husband,” says one bride.

Shooting in both digital and film, Hobson has a passion for the darkroom and often uses large format and other analog mediums. “Film beats filter any day,” he says. “My true inspiration in everything I shoot is the ability of photography – in all its forms – to make the moment permanent, creating an exquisite archive that will outlast everyone it involves.”
