8 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Caterer

So, you find yourself planning your dream wedding. Once you have chosen a venue, it is time to finalize all the details that make up your special day, including hiring a wedding caterer. Whitney and Josh from Blend Catering shared their experience creating wedding menus unique to a couple’s story and offered some ideas for finding your dream wedding caterer. Here are eight questions they recommend asking your caterer if you are looking to have a unique, food-forward wedding!

1. Do you specialize in a particular type of cuisine?

Some caterers specialize in a specific type of cuisine, whether it be organic, vegan, kosher, Halal, Asian, African, and more. If you’re looking for a particular type of food, ensure your wedding caterer has experience with that cooking style and is comfortable helping you with your menu.

2. Are your menus customizable?

Most caterers have a list of food choices for each course—a few appetizers, an entrée, and dessert options you can choose from. If a memorable wedding menu is important to you, you will want a caterer who is flexible and willing to make adjustments with you to suit your tastes. Or, even better, you may want to find a caterer who will work with you to create a fully custom menu that tells the bride and groom’s story.

3. Can you show me sample menus and/or photos from past weddings?

You may want to ask potential wedding caterers for sample menus or photos from past weddings. A good caterer will be happy to share this with you. In addition, a great caterer will be passionate about creative menus and excited to create something new with you.

4. Can the menu accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or other dietary requirements?

You or a handful of your guests will likely have unique dietary restrictions. Accommodating those requirements is thoughtful and often necessary. Remember to discuss any needs with your wedding caterer to decide on options.

5. What meal service styles do you offer (plated, buffet, family-style, etc.)?

Most catering companies offer a variety of meal service styles, but if you already have your heart set on one in particular, then it’s important to make sure that it is something they can accommodate. Let your caterer know what you have in mind for the wedding or if you have any unique ideas for serving.

6. Where is your food sourced?

Where the ingredients come from makes all the difference for a delicious wedding menu. If this is important to you, talk to your caterer about local, seasonal, or foraged ingredients.

7. Where will the food be prepared?

More often than not, your caterer will prepare your food at the venue. However, it is best to clarify with your caterer’s culinary team as cooking onsite may require additional equipment, water sources, etc., depending on the venue’s designated space.

8. Are you available on our wedding date?

The caterer’s availability may just be the most important question of all. Wedding caterers are often booked out for months. So, you will want plenty of time to come up with the perfect menu—and the further in advance you book your wedding caterer, the more time you’ll have to do so.
